Prepare your pipes for cold weather

A significant cold front is expected to move through Pinellas County on Saturday, Jan. 31, bringing near-freezing temperatures into Sunday, Feb. 1. While you’re taking steps to keep people and pets safe, don’t forget about your water pipes! Freezing temperatures can cause pipes to burst, leading to costly repairs and water damage.
Here’s how you can protect your home:
- Insulate exposed pipes in attics, basements and crawl spaces.
- Shut off, drain and cover outdoor faucets, hoses and irrigation systems.
- Keep a small trickle of water running from faucets during freezing conditions.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
- Maintain indoor heat at 55°F or higher, even when you’re away.
- Locate and label your main water shut-off valve for emergencies.
If your pipes freeze:
- Turn off water at the main valve.
- Thaw pipes slowly using safe heat sources. Never use an open flame.
Taking these precautions now can help you avoid expensive damage and keep your water flowing during the cold snap.
