Americans with Disabilities Act / Public Accommodations

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), public accommodations, such as public parking spaces, ramps and handicapped railings must be accessible and service animals must be allowed access. The ADA guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment and transportation, state and local government services and telecommunications. Grievances concerning protections specifically provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act are filed separately from other claims.

Examples:

  • Insufficient handicap railings or handicap parking spots at business
  • Denied services or entry into building because of service animal
  • No wheelchair access on right of way
  • Denied reasonable modification on home due to disability
  • Denied reasonable modification on the job (such as installing a ramp or modifying a restroom)

Pinellas County’s coordinator for the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, is Jeffery Lorick, Director of Human Rights.
