Cherokee Drive Drainage Improvements

Project ID

002115A

Project Location

Cherokee Drive/48th Avenue N. area in unincorporated Seminole

Project Status

Study: In progress

Project Overview

The Cherokee Drive (48th Avenue North) neighborhood predominantly consists of single-family homes that were built as early as the 1950s. Multiple reports of flooding have been received over the years. Frequent maintenance activities were performed, yet the flooding continued. The flooding situation was evaluated and ranked with other flooding concerns across the County and then prioritized for inclusion in the Penny for Pinellas Flood Prevention Program. Project development, planning and survey work for the project began in 2022.

The first phase of the project is to collect data and develop a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER). The PER will study the existing drainage system and evaluate design alternatives to alleviate flooding and provide other stormwater improvements for the Cherokee Drive neighborhood. The PER will also evaluate the stormwater outfall into the man-made, tidal canal south of 47th Avenue. All proposed improvements will be designed and permitted in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.
