Ridgewood Estates Sewer Improvements

Project ID

0032041

Project Location

Ridgewood Estates at the east end of 82nd Avenue N and along 113th Street (near the intersection with 82nd Avenue N) in the City of Seminole

Project Status

Design: In progress

The Ridgewood Estates community has experienced previous sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) caused by rainwater entering the sewer system during heavy rainfall. As part of a comprehensive effort to prevent future SSOs, Pinellas County Utilities is replacing a section of the existing sanitary sewer pipes at the east end of 82nd Avenue N and along 113th Street (near the intersection with 82nd Avenue N) with larger pipes to increase sewer capacity and prevent future overflows. The project also includes installing a bioswale to filter pollutants from stormwater runoff, extending the sidewalk on 82nd Avenue N to 113th Street, and installing a section of water main pipe for upcoming water system improvements.

Project Goals and Benefits

  • Replaces aging and undersized sewer infrastructure for increased system capacity and reliability.
  • Prevents sanitary sewer overflows to safeguard public and environmental health and comply with current regulatory standards.
  • Enhances stormwater runoff pollutant treatment to safeguard water quality in natural systems.
  • Extends the sidewalk from 82nd Avenue N to 113th Street to improve community access and mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bioswale?

Bioswales are typically vegetated, swale-like drainage courses with gently sloped sides that maximize the time water spends in the swale, aiding the collection and removal of pollutants, silt, and debris. Bioswales are highly effective at protecting surface water and local waterways from excessive stormwater runoff pollutants.

Will this project increase my utility bill?

No, this project will not raise your utility bill.

Will this project improve wastewater service to homes and businesses in the area?

Yes, this project will improve wastewater service for homes and businesses in the area by increasing the sewer system’s capacity to handle wet-weather events and prevent sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) into the community and stormwater system.

Will the improvements help during hurricanes and floods?

Yes, these improvements will be helpful during hurricanes and floods. Heavy rainfall entering the sanitary sewer system can overload it, causing dangerous sewer overflows. Increasing pipe capacity and eliminating infiltration sources ensure the system can handle storm events and prevent overflows that could pollute homes, businesses, and natural waterways.

What are the hours of operation during the construction phase?

Construction will typically take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The construction schedule and duration may vary due to unforeseen circumstances, such as weather.

Will this project impact traffic in the area?

Yes, to ensure the safety of both workers and drivers, there will be temporary lane closures, flagging operations, and reduced speed limits on southbound 113th Street approaching the construction area. Expect posted signs indicating the closed lane and lower speed limits.

Additionally, commercial property driveway access and parking areas at the east end of 82nd Avenue N. may be limited during construction.
