Project Overview
This injection well project will ensure Pinellas County Utilities complies with Senate Bill 64, which requires eliminating the discharge of treated wastewater effluent from the South Cross Bayou Advanced Water Reclamation Facility. After extensive evaluation, the County determined that the most cost‑effective approach is to construct two deep injection wells near major reclaimed water transmission infrastructure to manage the facility’s permitted capacity of 30 million gallons per day.
The wells will be located at the McKay Creek Reclaimed Water Booster Station near Walsingham Road in Largo and at the Lake Seminole Park Maintenance Yard near 98th Street in Seminole. Each well will reach an injection zone roughly 600 to 1,000 feet below ground and will operate only during periods of low reclaimed water demand.
This project will benefit our customers and the overall community by:
- Providing for direct environmental benefits in Joe’s Creek, Boca Ciega Bay, and the Gulf of America by reducing the nutrient loads currently being discharged into these waters. As a result, the risk of Red Tide and other algal blooms that adversely impact our fish and wildlife will be decreased.
- Being the most cost-effective method to comply with the state requirement.
Potential Public Impacts
We will make every effort to minimize the impact of this project on the local community. While we intentionally identified these sites to provide some distance from residential homes, those living or working in the areas surrounding these two sites may hear construction noise activity during the week from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
