Home Inspections

Defects often go unnoticed by the average person. Before hiring a qualified individual to inspect the home, experts recommend that you, the buyer, do some checking on your own. Remember, home inspectors are not regulated by any government agency. A licensed general contractor is a suggested alternative.

Outdoors

• Take note of the overall condition. Is the house well maintained? Has the paint deteriorated?
• Observe the condition of the roof. How old is it? Are the shingles curling or lifting?
• Look closely at window and door frames. Is the wood decayed?
• Check pavements, driveways, and brick surfaces. Have all cracks been filled?

Indoors

• Look for insulation in the attic and crawl space.
• Test the plumbing.
• Look over the interior walls and ceilings for any signs of water damage.
• Check the fuse boxes or circuit breakers. Are all breakers labeled?
• Check the oil or gas heating and air conditioning. How old is it?
• Look for evidence of termites.
