Lake Tarpon Aquifer Recharge Well

Project Location

Within John Chesnut Sr. Park, 2200 E Lake Rd S, Palm Harbor, just south of Brooker Creek.

Project Status

Construction: In progress

Project Overview

This project will improve the reliability and resilience of Pinellas County Utilities’ water supply by creating an additional source of irrigation water through the construction of an aquifer recharge and storage and recovery well.

This well will store excess water from Lake Tarpon that would otherwise flow into Tampa Bay. As water is available, it will be stored underground and recovered during periods of higher demand. This supplemental water source will help address seasonal water shortages, reduce the use of drinking water for irrigation and protect local groundwater resources. It will also help reduce the risk of saltwater intrusion by replenishing groundwater levels over time.

The well will be located away from the park’s primary public-use areas and operate primarily below ground. As a result, there should be no impacts to park visitors.

Projected Project Timeline

Construction began in late October 2026 and will be completed no later than May 2028.

Project Funding

This project is funded by the Pinellas County Utilities Sewer Fund.
