Why does the existing bridge need to be replaced?
Since its original construction in 1958, the bridge has undergone repairs to the seawalls in 1984 and 1994. The bridge itself underwent various repairs as well, with the last major repair occurring in 2001. The current bridge rating is such that replacement is warranted.
How wide will the new bridge be?
The bridge will be a total of 32-feet, 7.5-inches wide. The bridge will consist of barrier walls, a 1-foot, 4-inch wide shoulder on the north side, a 1-foot wide shoulder on the south side, two 10-foot wide travel lanes, and a 7-foot, 6-inch wide sidewalk along the south side.
What will be the clearance under the new bridge?
The minimum vertical clearance above mean high water will be 3.5 feet. The current clearance is approximately 2.15 feet. The existing horizontal clearance is 17 feet and the new bridge will provide a horizontal clearance of 21.5 feet.
How will I access my home on the island?
The bridge will be constructed in two phases. The south half of the bridge will be demolished and reconstructed in Phase 1, while the north half will carry the two-way traffic. Traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals. Upon completion of the south half of the new bridge, traffic will be moved to that portion, and the north half of the existing bridge will be demolished and reconstructed. Likewise, traffic along the south half of the bridge will also be controlled by temporary traffic signals.
Will recreational paddlers be able to cross beneath the bridge during construction?
The bridge will be closed to paddle craft during some phases of construction. Closure notification will be provided on this website.
