JOB SUMMARY
Performs highly skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty gasoline and diesel fueled vehicles (Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) classes 1 through 8) but generally heavy trucks such as dump trucks, sewer trucks, bucket trucks, grapple trucks and commercial grade multi-axle heavy duty trucks. An incumbent may be required on occasion to act as lead worker and / or trainer for other Fleet Management staff members including the inspection of completed work.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (examples, not all inclusive)
- Read and comprehend written and electronic repair manuals including wiring schematics and diagnostic diagrams;
- Diagnose heavy trucks with electronic test equipment such as scanners, volt/ohm meters and laptop applications competently and within industry time standards. Perform complex heavy-duty fluid and air brake diagnosis and repair, including component fault diagnosis (slack adjusters, brake can, governors, air systems), removal and replacement;
- Perform complex external and internal engine or electronic drive system diagnosis and repair, including component evaluation, overhaul, removal, and/or replacement;
- Perform complex heavy truck suspension fault diagnosis and repair, including component evaluation, removal and replacement;
- Perform complex regenerative exhaust system diagnosis and repair (DEF, DPF, etc.), including component removal and replacement;
- Perform heavy truck preventive maintenance and safety inspections;
- Perform basic fabrication skills, including MIG, stick & gas welding;
- Participate in on-call standby rotation as necessary;
- Update knowledge by reading and participating in industry related educational opportunities;
- Respond to road calls and work in the field on occasion as required;
- Prepare all work order documentation including detailed notes, and parts and labor entries;
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment;
- Perform other related work as required or as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Five (5) years of journeyman level experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy truck and diesel fueled equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
Special Qualifications (May be required depending on area of assignment):
- Florida Class A Commercial Driver’s License within twelve (12) months following date of hire.
- Possession and maintenance of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) T4 Heavy Truck Brakes and T5 Suspension and Steering within one (1) year following date of appointment.
- Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
- Mobile Air Conditioning Society certification and/or ASE air condition certification.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the operating principles of the electrical and mechanical systems and components found on vehicles and equipment;
- Knowledge of the operating principles of air brakes, air brake systems and associated components;
- Knowledge of the operating principles of exhaust system regeneration, DEF, DPF and associated components;
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive and heavy truck repair trade;
- Skill in the use of tools, machines, and testing instruments used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
- Skill in basic fabrication, including MIG, stick & gas welding;
- Ability to safely and effectively utilize forklifts, gantry cranes and vehicle / equipment lifts;
- Ability to perform administrative tasks, recordkeeping, and computer related functions;
- Ability to apply knowledge of equipment operating principles to diagnose and correct malfunctions in heavy trucks and equipment consistent with manufacturers’ labor time standards;
- Ability to use knowledge, creativity, and initiative in recommending or implementing improvements in servicing methods, tools, and materials;
- Ability to use web-based media, manuals and schematics in servicing vehicles and equipment;
- Ability to endure long periods of standing, walking, or working in inclement weather and possession of sufficient physical strength and agility to lift and move heavy objects;
- Ability to use small office equipment and computers.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
This work is physical in nature and typically takes place in a workshop environment. At times it requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
- Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
- Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
- Mental acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Visual acuity: Sufficient to effectively operate office equipment including copier, computer, etc.; and to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc. and to perceive color to identify objects or substances.
- Hearing ability: Sufficient to hold a conversation with other individuals both in person and over a telephone; and to hear recording on transcription device.
- Speaking ability: Sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and over a telephone.
- Mental acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Repetitive motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
- Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
