FAQs

Why should I get a mammogram?

Low dose x-rays of the breasts (mammograms) are used to detect cancer. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer has over a 90% survival rate when caught early.

Why are mammograms being given on a bus?

It’s all about convenience! You can do a mammogram on the bus in approximately 30 minutes during your work day. The goal is to encourage women, particularly those who have never gotten a mammogram, to get this vital screening.

Who is eligible for a mammogram?

Any female 40 or older (under 40 needs a prescription). Cigna allows one screening per calendar year which means you do not have to wait 365 days from your last mammogram. You are not eligible if you’ve been treated for breast cancer in the last 5 years, have symptoms (such as a lump) in your breasts, are pregnant, or have been breastfeeding within the past 5 months. Also, to be eligible you must be a current patient of an OB/GYN or primary care doctor.

Do I need a prescription?

No. Neither a prescription nor doctor referral is needed if you are 40 or older. Under 40 requires a prescription.

How much does the mammogram cost?

The mammogram is covered at 100% through major insurance if it is preventive and you are a female age 40 or older.

What is the difference between a preventive and diagnostic mammogram?

A preventive mammogram (covered at 100%) is a routine screening. A diagnostic mammogram (subject to copay) is performed if you are experiencing symptoms in your breasts such as a lump.

How much does the 3D screening cost?

There is no additional charge for the 3D screening. Other providers may charge $50 or $100 extra for this service.

How long does it take?

The mammogram x-rays take approximately 15 minutes. If you have the paperwork completed and come at your scheduled time, it should take approximately 30 minutes total including wait time.

Do I need to use my leave time to get my mammogram?

Ask your supervisor if you need to use leave time.

What do I wear?

Wear a 2-piece outfit for convenience. Do not wear deodorant, perfume or powder since some contain substances that can show up on the x-ray as white spots. You may bring deodorant if desired. If you forget, wipes are available.

What should I bring?

Bring your insurance card. If under age 40, you will need to bring your prescription.

Does this qualify for wellness incentive rewards?

Yes. A preventive mammogram qualifies for 12,500 reward points or $50. See Wellness Incentives.

What if I have never had a mammogram before?

This is a perfect time to start! The mammographers on the bus have 20 or more years of experience and will make it quick and easy for you.

What happens on the bus?

There is a waiting area, or if you prefer, you may wait outside the bus until you are called. You will change into a gown in a private dressing room prior to your screening.

Who gets the results?

A letter with your results will be sent to your doctor. If you have an abnormal result, AdventHealth Mobile Mammography staff will call you and your doctor.
