FAQs

Why should I get a mammogram?

Low dose x-rays of the breasts (mammograms) are used to detect cancer. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer has over a 90% survival rate when caught early.

Why are mammograms being given on a bus?

It’s all about convenience! You can do a mammogram on the bus in approximately 30 minutes during your workday. The goal is to encourage women, particularly those who have never gotten a mammogram, to get this vital screening.

Who is eligible for a mammogram?

Females age 35 and older are eligible for a mammogram. A prescription needed if you are age 35 to 39, no prescription if you are 40 or older.

You are not eligible if:

  • Have symptoms (such as a lump) in your breasts. If you have concerns, please discuss your symptoms with your primary care doctor as soon as possible.
  • You’ve been treated for breast cancer in the last 5 years
  • You are pregnant.
  • You have been breastfeeding within the past 5 months.

Do I have to wait exactly one year from last year's mammogram?

No. UMR (UnitedHealthcare) allows one screening per calendar year which means you do not have to wait 365 days from your last mammogram.

Do I need a prescription?

No prescription is needed if you are 40 or older. Age 35 to 39 need a prescription.

How much does the mammogram cost?

The mammogram is covered at 100% through major insurance if it is preventive and you are a female age 35 or older.

What is the difference between a preventive and diagnostic mammogram?

The mobile mammogram bus only performs preventive mammograms.

A preventive mammogram is a routine screening. A diagnostic mammogram is performed if you are experiencing symptoms such as a lump in your breast. UMR (UnitedHealthcare) covers all mammograms at 100%, preventive and diagnostic.

How much does the 3D screening cost?

There is no additional charge for the 3D screening. Other providers may charge $50 or $100 extra for this service.

How long does it take?

The mammogram x-rays take approximately 15 minutes. If you have the paperwork completed and come at your scheduled time, it should take approximately 30 minutes total including wait time.

Do I need to use my leave time to get my mammogram?

In general, onsite wellness visits can be coordinated with your supervisor in advance to be done during work time if the location and timeframe are reasonable and do not interfere with the department’s ability to continue County services.

What do I wear?

Wear a 2-piece outfit for convenience. Do not wear deodorant, perfume or powder since some contain substances that can show up on the x-ray as white spots. You may bring deodorant if desired. If you forget, wipes are available.

What should I bring?

Bring your insurance card. If age 35 to 39, you will need to bring a prescription.

Does this qualify for Wellness Incentive Program rewards?

Yes. Mammograms qualify for $50 or 12,500 reward points. See Wellness Incentives.

What if I have never had a mammogram before?

This is a perfect time to start! The mammographers on the bus have 20 or more years of experience and will make it quick and easy for you.

What happens on the bus?

There is a waiting area, or if you prefer, you may wait outside the bus until you are called. You will change into a gown in a private dressing room prior to your screening.

Who gets the results?

A letter with your results will be sent to you at the address you provide within 30 days. If you include a doctor’s office during registration, a copy of your report will be mailed to your doctor within the same timeframe. If your mammogram shows something abnormal, additional tests will be needed to evaluate the finding. AdventHealth will assist with arranging follow-up care, if needed.
