Pinellas Update #2: All Pinellas parks and preserves to close Sunday

Latest storm developments

  • Tropical Storm Debby is expected to impact Pinellas County on Sunday, Aug. 4.
  • A Tropical Storm Warning, Storm Surge Watch and Flood Watch are in effect for Pinellas County, meaning tropical storm conditions are likely this weekend.
  • Heavy rains, storm surge, coastal flooding and gusty winds are possible across Pinellas County starting Sunday, Aug. 4.
  • The current forecast from the National Hurricane Center projects two to four feet of storm surge in addition to heavy rainfall of four to six inches on Sunday, Aug. 4.

Pinellas County response/action

General

  • All Pinellas County parks and preserves will be closed Sunday, Aug. 4. Boat ramps will be closed to residents except for those taking boats out of the water for safety.
  • The County Information Center remains open Saturday, Aug. 3 until 10 p.m. and will be open Sunday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. for preparedness questions. Call (727) 464-4333.

  • After distributing more than 3,400 sandbags, Pinellas County’s sandbag sites are closed, and sandbag operations have concluded.

Advice & Information for Residents

  • Review and finalize personal preparedness plans and emergency kits.
  • Coastal and barrier island residents should prepare for potential storm surge and localized flooding.
  • Help prevent flooding in your neighborhood by keeping storm drains and waterways clear. Ensure your gutters are clean to help prevent water from entering your home.
  • If you live in a low-lying or flood-prone area, have a plan to protect items in your home: Elevate valuables and furniture in your home. Place important documents in waterproof containers. Move your car to higher ground, especially electric vehicles, which can catch fire when exposed to floodwaters.
  • Monitor local news media, National Weather Service, disaster.pinellas.gov, Facebook @PinellasGov and Twitter @PinellasGov. Check for updates at least every 6-12 hours as storm forecasts and guidance can change quickly.
