Westwinds and Crosswinds Bridges Project

Project ID

000700A

Project Location

Replacement of aging bridges respectively on Westwinds Drive over the Westwinds Canal and Crosswinds Drive over the Crosswinds Canal in Palm Harbor.

Project Status

Construction: In progress

Project Update

The project is currently on hold awaiting authorization from the US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) to permit the construction of a cofferdam across the canal for the installation of the new sanitary sewer line which must be placed under the bridge. Conversations with permitting agencies during the design process indicated the sewer line was an exempt activity; however, the construction of the cofferdam is not.

We are working closely with the USACE to move the permit along as quickly as possible. The contractor will resume activities as soon as the permit is received. We know this is a major inconvenience and we appreciate your patience.

Note: The Westwinds Drive Bridge was completed in July 2021 and is open for use.

Project Overview

Pinellas County is replacing the Westwinds and Crosswinds Bridges as part of its ongoing effort to maintain and operate the network of over 140 bridges located throughout the County. Pinellas County Public Works, through the County’s Capital Improvement Program, is replacing the aging bridges on Westwinds Drive over the Westwinds Canal and Crosswinds Drive over the Crosswinds Canal in Palm Harbor. The new bridges will meet current design criteria and provide wider shoulders and raised sidewalks on both sides allowing for a safer pedestrian facility.
