East Lake Road/Tarpon Woods Boulevard Intersection Lane Extension
East Lake Road Update
Beginning Monday, April 20, Pinellas County Public Works will begin making improvements to the intersection of East Lake Road and Tarpon Woods Boulevard in East Lake. In this phase, the concrete island on the southeast corner of the intersection will be removed and the median on Tarpon Woods Boulevard will be pulled back.
As part of this work, the dedicated right turn lane that leads from northbound East Lake Road onto Tarpon Woods Boulevard will be closed from approximately 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. daily until Friday, April 24. During this time, the righthand through lane will serve as a temporary turn lane into the communities of Tarpon Woods. The crosswalks on the southeast corner will also be closed for the removal of the island, but temporary paths and markings will be provided to guide pedestrians and cyclists. The dedicated turn lane is expected to be open during typical morning and evening commutes.
Work hours are being limited to off-peak times to help with traffic flow and Public Works will be monitoring and adjusting signal timing at the intersection to assist. Motorists should still expect some delays and are urged to use additional caution while approaching and traveling through the intersection. The purpose of this project is to make the roadway adjustments necessary to eventually add a third northbound lane through the intersection to help alleviate congestion.
Temporary Traffic Change: April 2026

Project Overview
The overall project consists of adding an additional northbound travel lane on East Lake Road, beginning south of the intersection of Tarpon Woods Boulevard and extending north through the intersection. The existing roadway has two northbound travel lanes and dedicated turning lanes on the east and west. The posted speed limit is 50 mph.
The project will turn the chevron-striped area (next to the westbound turn lane) and into a travel lane, and the intersection will be repaved and restriped.
Additionally, the concrete island on the east side of the intersection will be removed, and the median on Tarpon Woods Boulevard will be shortened to create a new crosswalk. The dedicated eastbound turn lane onto Tarpon Woods Boulevard will remain.
