Guardians of the Gulf: Beach Patrol Lifeguards in Action

June 2024

The Pinellas County Beach Patrol Lifeguards are rising to the challenges of a demanding season, proving how essential they are to beach safety. So far this year, they have assisted in 11 water rescues, responded to 10 major medical incidents that involved Emergency Medical Services and handled 82 minor medical issues resolved on the beach. Additionally, they made more than 500 preventative actions to protect swimmers and other beachgoers.

These statistics showcase the importance of swimming near a lifeguard. Lifeguards are trained professionals equipped to handle emergencies and prevent accidents, making the beach better place for everyone.

Special thanks to Sand Key lifeguards, Tim O’Keefe, John Knebel, and Zekeal Ganio, who received commendation from the County EMS Medical Examiner for their quick actions that saved the life of a visitor.
