Utilities Team Rescues Ducklings

June 2024

Thank you to our Electrical/Mechanical Technician Plant Maintenance team at South Cross Bayou for rescuing over 18 ducklings already this season! The ducklings had fallen into the sewer grates and all but 2 were reunited with their mothers. The last 2 ducklings were quite waterlogged but doing well now. They were relocated to a duck sanctuary and adopted by a surrogate.

We have now taken preventative measures to ensure that ducklings will not continue to fall into the sewer grates. Special thanks to our new Program Coordinator, Greg Dyer for helping to facilitate this measure.

As a reminder, if you do find a sick or injured bird, there are organizations ready to help and answer questions. It’s always best to leave baby birds alone to see if the mother returns and try not to handle them directly.  For assistance with injured or abandoned baby birds, call:

  • Birds in Helping Hands, Largo, (727) 365-4592
  • Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, Indian Shores, (727) 391-6211
